Self Portraits

This first month of the Spring Program, we explored a variety of mediums but kept our subject matter consistent. There is nothing like a mirror to spur creativity. Historically artists have searched deep and captured themselves on a regular basis - so Studio 110 followed with tradition.

We studied value by using only black, white, and gray pastels - then we thought about different meanings of the word "value" and students declared their values in the backgrounds - kind of graffiti style.













Clay is always a popular medium and as an instructor I may have been a tad ambitious with this project but my students are all "clay warriors" and they jumped right in. We did have a few "kiln casualties" but all and all I was very pleased with the finished projects. Check out the self portrait busts:
