What's in a Name?

Recently Studio 110 students worked on a a study in collage, texture, and relief.

In art as in life, there can be many layers.... in our lesson we used torn magazine paper collage, texture rubbing backgrounds, water color
over an oil pastel resist and a final contrasting color border for each letter

Finally all letters were assembled (in order :) and voila - a well worked, visually interesting piece of art.

...With a special little shout out to Sarah-Helen.... for the longest name and only hyphen!!

Learning to Draw Faces ...

You can try this one at home!!

Faces seem so complex and difficult but in reality they are just like that apple or tree or flower. They have shapes, colors, shadows, highlights - but they also have some basic rules and proportions. The biggest rule:

The eyes are halfway between the top of the head and the chin.

This lesson is great practice and usually has a very rewarding result.

Simply start saving full face images from your magazines -especially the full page ones.
Slice them perfectly down the middle and glue one side to your drawing paper.
Now simply begin drawing the missing side... be sure to add shadow and color if you like.
Sometimes cropping the final product is necessary.

Here are a few examples from Studio 110 Students :
