"Four Hearts"
1969
Jim Dine
"My attitude towards drawing is not necessarily about drawing. It'sabout
making the best kind of image I can make, it's about talking as clearly as I can." ~ Jim Dine
I'm sure the concept of hearts for the month of February may not strike you as cutting edge..... but this simple symbol is quite universal and life changing.
"Wherever you go, go with all your heart" ~ Confucious
We took this strong simple and familiar symbol and learned a little about Jim Dine and Pop Art. I think my students were most impressed with the fact that he is still alive!
In 1962 Dine's work along with Warhol's, Lichtenstein's, Dowd's, Hefferton's, Good's, Ruscha's, and Thiebaud's made up an exhibition which is credited with being the first Pop Art Exhibition in America.
Pop Art can be any every day item that is drawn in a brash and colorful way. Pop Art is short for Popular Art. It is inspired by comic strips, advertising, and popular entertainment.
My goal is exposure to Artists and Art Movements - a great moment for me would be when one of my students is wondering around a museum and he/she says "I know that artist -Miss Leigh taught us ".

We used multiple steps and multiple mediums to create fun and colorful Pop Art Hearts. No heart stencils but yes to a few rulers for straight lines! When students work on more than one project at a time -pieces can dry while another is being created - win win!
Here are a few examples:
