9 ways Pottery and Life are alike...

1. Sometimes what you take away is more important than what you add.

2. Center and balance are crutial.

3. You can smooth as you go.

4. Its important to know when to "pinch" hard and when to have a soft touch.

5. It always necessary to get your hands dirty.

6. Plans are nice but not mandatory.

7. When the foundation is strong - most anything is possible.

8. Strength can come from walking away for a bit.

9 Its gonna get hot - but that's when the magic happens!

...These things come to me with clay covered hands and are scratched on the newsprint that I work on - art brings me little moments of clarity and sometimes philosophy.

I love when my art students find that sweet spot - sometimes you can feel the creative energy in the air.

When are you truly in the moment?

Louise Nevelson became noted for her sculptures of "assemblage art". This was art created from odds and ends that were pieced together and painted one color- usually white or black.

She was born in Russia and moved to Maine when she was five. In class we discussed how she felt very out of place but found joy in the arts! This lead to great class discussion - most everyone has had a moment like this!

After viewing her art - we began Learning and exploring with found objects. Its so fun to watch them create something exciting from nothing - the switch in the brain is almost visible. We finished the project with each student choosing which single color I would coat these in. Thus a new art term - monochromatic

My art students KNOW that small drawing just wont work in our class. In fact O'Keeffe was critiqued by an instructor once and swore that she would never draw small again!

We recently studied Georgia O'Keffee and learned what an incredible and full and creative life she led. I have for years found her inspiring - A favorite image of mine is Okeeffe on a camel in Morocco at the age of 87. Who wants to meet me in Morocco to celebrate my 87th birthday??

We applied what we learned from O'Keeffe by getting up close and personal with various blooms. Students were asked to "GET BIG". They loved the lesson and especially loved taking the flowers home with them!!

Presenting Picasso

During April, Studio 110 students were introduced to Pablo Picasso.

Here were our favorite fun facts about the Spanish artist:

1. Picasso’s full name has 23 words:Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso.

2. Picasso’s first word – Pencil

3. He completed his first painting at age 9

4. Picasso was a bad student - He did not like to be told what to do – spent a lot of time in “time out”

5. Recognized as the world's most prolific painter by the Guinness Book of World Records: during a career that lasted 78 years he produced an estimated 13,500 paintings or designs, 100,000 prints or engravings, 34,000 book illustrations and 300 sculptures or ceramics, making a total of 147,800 works of art.

During the April's lessons we worked on portrait techniques, creating mood through color, and learning the principles of cubism. Students loved learning about Picasso's Blue and Rose period because everyone can relate to being happy and sad.

Easter Craft

As I child I remember hours of flower making with layers and layers of tissue paper..

Handprint Easter Lily Bouquet of Flowers : Easter Crafts for Your Children

If you like the way the above Handprints Easter Lily Bouquet looks, then take a look at the easy instructions below to make one just like this with your child's handprints. Celebrating Easter can be a lot of fun when you have the right child-friendly activities. Have fun.

CRAFTS MATERIALS NEEDED

1. Chenille ‘pipe cleaner’ wires: 1 yellow, 3 green
2. Chenille stem for ribbon, or curling ribbon
3. Tape
4. Scissors
5. Crayon, pencil or marker
6. White heavy construction paper

1 – Trace your youngsters hand onto the white paper with a crayon or pencil, cut out as many as you want for the lily blooms.

2 – Roll the handprint vertically to form a funnel shape, secure the side with clear tape.

3 – Roll each finger down to form the curls of each bloom.

4 – Cut the yellow pipe cleaner to approx 3 inches each. Loosely curve the yellow piece to form a ‘U’ shape. Wrap the top of a green pipe cleaner at the bottom of the ‘U’. Curl the ends of the yellow cleaner to form the center of the bloom.

5 – Insert the completed green stem into the center of the bloom and pull through.

6 – Gather the flowers and wrap the pink pipe cleaner once around the stems to fasten. Then make one loop for the ribbon and wrap around, repeat for 2^nd loop.

7 – These make great surprises for MOM!
